Monday, 6-9-08, Alma Heights, Pacifica, CA
We took the scenic route Kimo suggested along a bike trail on the coast to Joe and Elaine’s house (members of the church), and they treated us to a nice breakfast and fellowship before we headed out on Devil’s Slide. The ride was narrow and steep at places, so at times we walked, but we finally coasted down the other side and ended up in Pacifica where, after going to Safeway, dropped the kids off at the beach while Becky, Mama and I went to a bike store to check on Becky’s derailer and buy Paul a bell. We also had to locate a place to stay because there were no campgrounds in Pacifica. On the way we passed by a shady grassy area – Alma Heights Christian School. Some cars were parked there so I pulled in and asked a guy at the desk if we could put our tent up for the night. He asked the principal who agreed to let us camp and even opened the restrooms and shower. What a nice gesture! We ate well that night and I went down into town to use the laundry mat. It took forever to finish drying the two loads. When I got back, it was practically dark. The children excitedly greeted me claiming they had just seen a mother skunk with its babies right next to where they were standing next to a fence. I got there too late and missed it. They had also seen a buck that night. After taking showers and writing in the journals, we went to bed. 25 miles.
