Saturday, 6-7-08, KOA campground before Pescadero, CA
We got an early start, around 6:15 am. Like we hoped, there was only a whisper of breeze at that hour, so we made pretty good time. We stopped in the little town of Davenport
and splurged at the bakery – too expensive but delicious. After about 30 miles, the wind picked up and got real bad about 12 miles from Pescadero. We stopped in a sheltered ditch and ate and drank most of our Safeway supplies from yesterday before deciding to regress about a mile to a KOA campground we had passed earlier. When we got there, the family rested while I scoped out a site. I returned to an amazing discovery – Willie’s front tire quick release was completely missing from his wheel, not the nut, the whole axel. When did he loose it? How did he not notice it fall out? How was it possible to ride without it?! We looked for it and could not find it, and there was no bicycle shop for miles. What a dilemma! Then a man told us they rented mountain bikes here at the campground. When I went to the bike rental place and told the mechanic the story, he replaced the quick release with an old one from an extra wheel at no charge. Praise God! Good thing we stopped at that campground. Unfortunately, the food prices at the camp store were astronomical, so we bought as little as possible, but we were hungry so we ended up buying two loaves of bread and jam to go with our peanut butter. The showers were great and we washed our dirty clothes by hand in the sink; most of them dried before sundown. 30 miles.
